History

Loch Broom Sailing Club (LBSC) is open to all with an interest in the sea and sailing. You don't have to own your own boat or even have much experience. Learning to sail does not take long; becoming a sailor takes a lifetime. Ullapool was founded to develop herring fishing in 1788 in the days of sail and still retains strong links to the sea and its active harbour. Loch Broom Sailing Club was established in the late 1950s, and benefits from that long tradition of sailing in the waters we now share with many vessels; from fishing boats to ferries, cruise ships, services vessels, tall ships and recreational boaters. LBSC had humble beginnings based in a shed on the old harbour – sailing and racing traditional 16’ open fishing boats (Bhata's). In 1979, the club was formally constituted in order to secure funding that enabled the clubhouse to be built on land that was gifted to it at the head of the then little used ‘wee pier’. In March 2024 we converted the club to a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO). LBSC is affiliated to the Royal Yachting Association. For a small community, Ullapool has a vibrant Sailing Club and while most members are from the local area, others live throughout in the North of Scotland and beyond. We feel proud and lucky to be in the middle of a world class area for sailing. The Pontoons and visitor moorings are managed by the Ullapool Harbour Trust https://www.ullapool-harbour.co.uk/ private moorings are co-ordinated separately through the Loch Broom Mooring Owners Assosciation, the harbour can provide the contact details for the secretary.
