History

Wigan Sailing Club was formed in July 1968 on what is now known as Orrell Water Park, where the club operated till April 1969 when the club moved to the current home of Scotmans Flash, where they operated out of cars and a tent for open events. The club became affiliated to the RYA in February 1970 and in June of the same year saw the establishment of the Mirror fleet No.87 and the laser class was adopted in October 1974, both classes still sail on the water although not as strong as back in the seventies. The club house was refurbished in march 1991 when the changing facilities were relocated into a purpose built building positioned behind the clubhouse, which allows access for members outside club days and allowed the original building to be opened out in to one large area. The club received a grant to replace the existing wooden floating jetties with new steel framed jetties, which were assembled on the side of the lake and floated into place just in time for the club to lay host to the GP14 juniors.
