History

At present, the Club’s fleet of dinghies consists of eight 470s, seven 420s and access to a Hobie 16. There are also two rescue boats. There is an Old Shirburnian Sailing Society (OSSS) weekend, when boys are invited to cruise in the Solent in larger boats and at the end of the Trinity Term there is a sailing camp at Arne. The Andrew Yorke Award exists to sponsor pupils of 16+ to gain their RYA dingy instructor qualification and to promote race training. Dinghy Sailing Winter: Sutton Bingham Reservoir – Thursday, and occasional Saturday and Sundays Summer: Arne on Poole Harbour – most Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, with overnight camping at the weekends. Racing There is one School team, with several matches each term, and an inter-house competition. Good helms may also take part in the Sutton Bingham club races. The School enters national team racing and individual racing events. Membership of the Sailing Club is £35.00 per year, which includes unlimited sailing at Sutton Bingham, extra charges for transport are made when sailing at Poole. All equipment is provided by the Club.
